Marathon runner and fundraiser Derek Haines has completed his latest challenge for charity on June 13 — climbing three mountains in Bolivia.

Mr. Haines, along with Vico Testori and Barry Yetton, set out for Bolivia in May to climb Condoriri, Huayna Potosi and Illimani as part of “The Mountains and Marathons Challenge,” to raise money for the Have a Heart Cayman Islands Foundation. The Cayman Islands flag was flying at the summit of Mount Tarija in the Bolivian Andes this week as charity mountain climbers completed the first part of a “three-peak challenge.”

As one of the flattest islands on earth, Grand Cayman does not seem like the ideal place to train for a three-peak mountain climbing challenge in the “roof of the world.”

But that has not stopped Derek Haines and his charity challenge team from putting in the hard yards as they prepare to travel to Bolivia this weekend as part of a fundraising campaign in aid of the Have a Heart Cayman Islands Foundation, which finances lifesaving heart surgeries at Health City for underprivileged children. Having run six marathons worldwide and raised more than $1 million for Cayman HospiceCare in 2014, Derek Haines is now setting his sights even higher: He’ll climb three mountains in Bolivia and run two marathons this year in his effort to raise at least another $1 million for Have a Heart Cayman Islands.

Local runner begins new marathon challenge

Veteran marathon man Derek Haines is taking on yet another incredible and gruelling challenge to raise $1 million for a local heart charity. In 2016, the 67-year-old runner is planning to run In a 50K endurance race, scale three Bolivian mountain peaks and finish two marathons to raise cash for Have a Heart Cayman Islands.
